20 Makeup Struggles All Women Can Relate To

Makeup Is Hard

Getting the perfect blend, choosing the right colors, and applying the right techniques are all things you have to think about when doing your makeup. It's so much harder than people make it out to be! And as you learn the dos and don'ts of getting it right, we know you're going to experience your fair share of failures and mistakes. Here are 20 really common makeup struggles we know all women go through.

1. Getting The Winged Eyeliner Right

If there’s one step in a woman’s makeup routine that gives her nightmares every time, it’s trying to get the perfect winged eyeliner on the first step. It always feels like an impossible feat! From accidentally poking your own eye to dealing with shaky hands and blinking, you truly can’t call yourself a makeup whiz until you’ve mastered this step.

2. Matching Foundation

Never underestimate how difficult it can be trying to match your foundation with your actual skin! Trying to learn what your undertone is can truly be a challenge – are your veins blue or green, and why does it look like both? Many women have felt the embarrassment of completely picking the wrong shade and ending up with foundation that looks terribly different from their neck.

3. Disappointing Shade Ranges

But sometimes, it’s not a skill issue, it’s a product issue. Though the beauty industry has transformed for the better in recent years, there’s still a long way to go. One of the big changes that makeup users are always wishing for is improved, more inclusive shade ranges. There’s nothing more disappointing than being unable to use a product simply because the company didn’t include you in their demographic.

4. Accidentally Applying Too Much

There’s a learning curve when it comes to mastering your makeup look, and that usually comes with first realizing when too much is, well, too much. We know you’ve experienced that dry, cakey look from putting on too much concealer or the clown-like resemblance you see when you’ve put on too much blush. At the end of the day, it’s about learning balance from the trial-and-error process that comes with it.

5. Smudging Your Mascara

How many of you have accidentally rubbed your eyes after putting on mascara? Or forgot to prep your lashes properly and ended up with black all under your eyes? Many women know the struggle of dealing with this product, which is one of the most finicky to put on your face. Being so dark in color, every little mistake you make becomes instantly known on your face.

6. Touching Your Face Accidentally

From scratching your forehead to resting your face in your palms, it can be incredibly easy to forget you’ve got a masterpiece on your face that you shouldn’t be touching. The worst is knowing you’ve ruined your look because of this momentary forgetfulness.

7. Messing Up The Smoky Eye

When you have to use such dark colors around your eye, you’re just one step away from accidentally turning into a raccoon. Mastering the smoky eye is what all young makeup lovers strive for. When done right, it can really accentuate the eyes and level up the look, but when done poorly, it can look like a mess that’s hard to ignore.

8. Lipstick On Your Teeth

How lipstick even gets on one’s teeth, we’ll never know. The problem is, it’s a lot more common than you might think! While putting on lipstick seems like a pretty simple step, one accidental swipe might just leave you with a noticeable print on your pearly whites without you even realizing it.

9. Cakey Foundation

To create a beautiful look, it all starts with the base: the foundation. But getting the foundation right is a lot easier said than done. There are too many ways that it can look cakey; from using too much product to not prepping the skin correctly, every makeup lover is always terrified of leaving the house with a cakey face.

10. Forgetting A Step

Full-face glam comes with many steps so don’t be too hard on yourself if you happen to forget something! Whether it’s forgetting to put on eyeshadow primer to make the colors pop or finishing the look with setting spray, sometimes even the best of us can forget one out of the thirty or so steps in our routine.

11. Getting Makeup On Your Clothes

Rule one when doing your makeup? Make sure you’re already changed into the clothes you want to wear before starting. Because one step that often gets overlooked but can be the most damaging is having to pull off and put on your clothes while avoiding your freshly done face. Too many of your white tees have been coated in foundation before!

12. Overly Matte Lipstick

The saying, “Beauty is pain,” is truly an outdated statement we don’t think should be followed anymore. Because who wants to deal with overly dry lips for the whole night just for the sake of keeping color on your mouth? Overly matte lipsticks leave behind a truly uncomfortable experience on your lips that no woman would ever wish on another person.

13. Overly Stick Lip Gloss

The opposite can be just as bad though; like matte lipstick, overly sticky lip gloss is just as annoying to deal with. That unsettling feeling when you smack your lips together to create this sticky, glue-like sensation is one that we refuse to put on our mouths even if it was the most beautiful gloss in the world.

14. Struggling With Recreating Looks

Have you ever watched a video of the most stunning makeup look and thought, “Yeah, I can do that” only to fail miserably? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. It’s not an understatement to say that makeup is truly an art form that requires skill and technique. Trying to recreate someone else’s vision is a lot easier said than done!

15. Doesn’t Match Your Outfit

Though it might not seem like a big deal, not matching your makeup to your outfit can result in a messy look that clashes left and right. Picking complimentary colors is very important in creating the final cohesive look.

16. Your Blush And Lipstick Don’t Match

How bad could a bright pink blush look with a dark red lipstick? They’re in a similar color palette, right? Wrong. Picking lipstick and blush colors that don’t go together might just ruin your entire vision, something many women know all too well.

17. Messing Up Your Nose Contour

Nose contour became a trending step in everyone’s makeup routine when people realized just how much this simple addition can transform your face. And while it might just be one step, it’s a difficult one to get right. It’s all about adding the right amount of shadow so that the shape is exactly what you want it to be.

18. Over Highlighting

Looking like a glittery disco ball might not sound bad in theory, but ladies know all too well the disaster that happens when you apply a little too much highlighter. The purpose of this product is to bring forth a lovely “glow from within” kind of look, but when it looks simply like shiny glue has been spread across your cheekbones, that’s when it turns into something you weren’t exactly planning.

19. Eyelashes That Don’t Stay Curled

We’ve all seen beautiful photos of women with dark, long, and thick eyelashes that frame their eyes, which is why women with stubby lashes always feel particularly frustrated. No matter how much you curl them, they just keep falling flat as if you hadn’t done anything!

20. Trying To Spot Conceal

Getting acne is a totally normal thing that everyone experiences, but there’s also nothing wrong with wanting to cover it up with some concealer if it makes you feel more confident. However, the struggle with trying to hide bright red on your face is one that proves to be more of a challenge than initially thought of, as many will know.
