Fashion Hates to Fashion Greats
As we all know, fashion trends tend to come and go. Some, however, like the styles that were popular in the '90s and 2000s, have slowly made their comeback, since certain pieces remain timeless and never go out of style. And then there are other trends, the ones we wished never existed at all. From towel skirts to cargo pants, here are 10 questionable fashion styles we disagree with—and 10 that are iconic.
1. Towel Skirt
Whether you're a Balenciaga follower or just chronically online, you've probably seen the brand selling Towel Skirts. And this clothing item is exactly what it says on the tin—it's a skirt made to look like you just hopped out of the shower with only a towel around your waist. If this doesn't top the questionable fashion trends list, we don't know what does.
2. Metal Shoes
Another item hailing from Balenciaga, these metal boots are meant for stomping around—or stomping on your enemy's toes. Seriously, we're not sure what else these are worn (or good) for other than to look absolutely ridiculous when you're out doing your errands.
3. Bleached Eyebrows
Lightening your eyebrows to match your hair color is one thing, but to bleach them completely nonexistent is definitely another. We certainly aren't sure we'd want to get behind the trend of having no eyebrows; after all, eyebrows frame our face and are one of the key defining features of everyone's face.
4. Underwear as Outerwear
Whether you're trying to channel your inner Kendall Jenner or you're just keen on trying new things, wearing your underwear over tights or with nothing else at all except for a sweater is a look you should probably avoid. Even though various designer brands—from Miu Miu to Gucci—have jumped on this trend, sometimes, it's better not to follow the crowd.
5. Sheer Dresses
What's more odd than wearing your underwear out? Wearing something sheer over it so that everything—and we mean everything—is visible. We understand being bold, sensual, and confident, but sheer dresses aren't the way to go.
6. Extreme Cutout Jeans
You've likely also seen these floating around. Not distressed or ripped jeans, but jeans with extreme cutouts—to the point it's questionable why the fabric was even necessary to make these when there's so little of it. Wearing these are, again, equivalent to wearing just your intimates outside, so it's probably best to reach for a more appropriate pair of jeans.
7. Socks with Heels or Sandals
If you're someone who wears socks with your slippers, sandals, or heels, this is another trend you should stop partaking in. Sure, you might think it's cute to wear frilly, mesh socks with heels, but save those for better, more suitable shoes.
8. Oversized Shoulder-Padded Blazers
Do you remember the trend of the '80s when women outerwear came with giant padded shoulders? Though this style was much more welcomed back in the day, it's not so in-trend anymore. Instead of wearing extremely oversized blazers with huge shoulders, stick to ones that are tailored to your body or are meant to be loose and chic.
9. Huge Chunky Shoes
Huge shoes have been a trend for a while. In particular, MSCHF released what would become an infamous item, inspired by the Japanese animated series Astro Boy: Big Red Boots. Unless you want to look like you hopped out of a cartoon, you should probably avoid these monstrosities.
10. Crocs Cowboy Boots
Worse than—or on par with—MSCHF's Big Red Boots are the Crocs Cowboy Boots. If you're someone who already finds regular Crocs unsightly, we're sorry to say that these ones will only disappoint you further. Now, for fashion trends that won't disappoint, let's jump into the 10 that are iconic.
1. Cargo Pants
A classic style from Y2K, these pants have withstood the test of time. Not only are they perfect for a slouchy, casual-yet-chic look, but they're also fitted with so many pockets that you probably won't even need to bring an extra bag.
2. Leather Jackets
Leather jackets are another timeless fashion piece. Whether you wear them cropped, fitted, or baggy, they add a great touch to any outfit. Better yet, make sure you choose worn leather to really dial in that vintage look.
3. Low-Rise Baggy Jeans
Gone are the days of high-rise skinny jeans—it's now time for low-rise baggy jeans to shine. Sitting right at the hip, these are best paired with a fitted cropped sweater or top to show off the navel and body line, but they're great paired with just about anything.
4. Denim Skirts
Micro, mini, or maxi, denim skirts have had our hearts since forever. Along with jean jackets, which are another fashion staple, these pieces have yet to go out of style because they're comfortable, durable, and, well, just plain stylish.
5. Crescent Bags
By now, we're sure everyone's seen the Uniqlo crescent-shaped bag that seems to hold just about anything. These bags have been the talk of town in recent years, and for good reason: they're great for casual outings and travel, plus they're lightweight and waterproof.
6. Camel or Wool Coats
Long camel or wool coats are the ultimate way to upgrade any look and can be dressed both up and down. Attending a designer fashion show, going to a fancy Michelin-starred restaurant, or just going to a friend's house? Camel coat.
7. Baseball Hats
Ever wondered why baseball caps look great on everyone? It's because they add that casual, effortless, sporty look to any outfit. Not to mention they can be worn rain or shine to protect you from drizzle or harmful sun rays, while still making you look chic. Talk about practical fashion.
8. White Sneakers
Baseball hats aren't the only fashion items that look great on anyone and go with any fit, classic white kicks go in that category, too. Apart from maybe not pairing well with formal dresses or suits, you can wear anything from sweats to skirts with these.
9. Flared Pants
Flared pants have made a recent resurgence, from leggings to joggers and jeans. It's no surprise, though, considering it's a style that flatters almost every body type. Just make sure you choose the right length or the ends will become frayed—unless that's the look you're going for.
10. Curtain Bangs
Looking for a hairdo that suits all face shapes? Then curtain bangs are the style for you. In case you haven't heard of these types of bangs, they're a kind of layered cut that's shorter than the rest of your hair that's then curled and styled to fall away from your face. These bangs especially look great on those with rounder faces.
